One of the most common questions we receive at Landscape Pros around this time in early spring is about the types and brand of tools we use for our own gardening work. With this in mind, here are a few items on our “must have” tool list for all you gardeners, as well as a short list of our favorite tools and supplies.
Whether you have a small garden or a large property, our preferences vary based on the size of our spaces! We’ve noted which tools are best for different types of tasks and garden sizes for your review.
Gardeners Must Have Tools
When Starting New Garden Beds
These tools are excellent for starting a new garden bed, but you may not use them too often once your garden is established. For starters a good square shovel is a multi-purpose tool that can be used when dividing plants to move around the garden. A few other tools we recommend include:
- Round Shovel for easy scooping
- Hard rake for grading
- And for chopping a Mattock
For Established Garden Beds
If your garden bed is established, using heavy duty tools like the ones above can be used for a touch up here and there, planting new containers, or adding new additional plants to your established beds. These tools are all portable and can be stored in a basket or box in your garage, car, or by your back door.
Some other tools you may use regularly will vary based on what’s in your garden like sharp scissors for quick deadheading or clipping fresh flowers and herbs, while and keeping a sharp pruning saw on hand for the shrubs in the garden.
- Garden shears/scissors
- Hand trowel
- Hand pruners
- Pruning saw
- Whisk rake
Ultimately, your choices rest on anything from the size of your garden and the types of plants you grow or are based on your height and reach. After all, it is all good when you enjoy gardening. If you need a good starting point on tools needed, here are a few brands and tool types we like to use.
If you have a large garden, and spend a lot of time working on tending your vegetable & herb garden, with many plants and containers these items work well:
- Fox Glove brand gloves
- Dewit Cape Cod Weeder
- Wilcox All Pro handle trowel
- Joyce Chen scissors, to deadhead & clipping herbs and flowers
- Small round shovel
- Felco hand pruners
